Being the youngest she is forbidden to marry and instead must look after her mother. She falls in love with Pedro, who asks for her hand in marriage. However, Tita's mother refuses and offers him Rosaura, Tita's elder sister, instead. Pedro accepts Rosaura just to be close to Tita. Tita finds this too much to bear and reacts by pouring all her emotions into her cooking, with dramatic results.
